Prospective parents must now submit to police checks to prove they have not abused children before they can receive IVF treatment. The requirement is part of the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act, passed last December, and will affect up to 5,000 couples a year, angering some, the Herald Sun newspaper said.

Briony and Lew Sanelle, who hope to have their second child through IVF, said they completed police checks three weeks ago and felt discriminated against. "My friends trying to have babies don't have to have a police check and go and talk to their doctor before they are given the go-ahead to have a baby, so why should I?" Ms Sanelle said.

"People who have a shady past, who they are trying to direct this at, do not have to go through this to conceive naturally ... this is discrimination."

i think IVF should be illegal. we are tampering with science and the human way too much. I am sorry to childless couples, that's just the way I feel.

IVF laws and stem cell research. I don't think the publuc undrstands enough about it. There are legal and ethical issues that we need to be clear about.

we should be bale to use the advances in science to help us. The adoption rate has plummeted, so why not let couples conceive artificially

IVF is a wonder, if not miracle of modern science. Conducted under the right conditions and ethical rules,m it can bring joy to thousands af otherwise childless couples, with breaching legal or ethical boundaries.
