Brendan Topics: 2 Posts: 33	Created 2 months ago A decision not to charge two security guards over the heat stroke death of a West Australian Aboriginal elder in a prison van has been greeted with anger and disbelief. Mr Ward, whose full name cannot be used for cultural reasons, died in the back of the van on the way from Laverton to Kalgoorlie in WA's Goldfields region in January 2008. On the weekend, WA's Director of Public Prosecutions Joe McGrath visited Mr Ward's widow Nancy at Warburton in the Central Desert and told her charges would not be laid. He told her there was no reasonable prospect of conviction if charges were laid against the two guards employed by the security firm GSL, now known as G4S. Mr Ward's family were reported to be distraught over the decision.

After about 50 hours of deliberation, the Brisbane Supreme Court jury in the manslaughter trial of Jayant Patel announced it had finally reached a verdict about 5.40pm (AEST) on Tuesday. Patel arrived back in court flanked by his lawyers and his wife Kishoree, who has been present for the duration of his 15-week trial. Stony-faced, he stood in the dock as the jury announced he was guilty of the manslaughter of Mervyn Morris, Gerardus Kemps and James Phillips. The jury also found him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Vowles.
